The Blue Egg Gene Chicken DNA Test is an in-house DNA test to determine the number of copies of the oocyan allele in chickens (Gallus gallus domesticus).
Check how many copies of the Blue Egg Gene your chicken is carrying!
This is a test for real chickens, using blood which you will need to collect, or have a vet collect for you. Alternatively, feather follicles may be used.
The Blue Egg Gene Chicken DNA Test is an in-house DNA test for determining the presence of the oocyan allele in chickens (Gallus gallus domesticus). No need to ship samples to a lab, obtain results in hours!
Sample collection is easy: DNA is extracted from dried blood spots and feather follicle samples. Result interpretation is clear: one lower band indicates the presence of two copies of the Blue Egg Gene, two bands indicate the presence of only one copy of the Blue Egg Gene, while the presence of only the upper band indicates the absence of the Blue Egg gene. Therefore, this test can determine whether a chicken is heterozygous or homozygous for the oocyan allele.
This is a gelPCR™ test, based on PCR and DNA gel electrophoresis.
One kit of the Blue Egg Gene Chicken DNA Test provides enough material for 32 tests + 6 controls. The kit includes reagents and PCR tubes. Equipment is sold separately.
How it works:
- Setup and lysis (30 min)
- PCR (85 min)
- Electrophoresis (45 min)
Notes:
- One kit provides enough reagent for 32 tests and 6 controls, plus ten strips of 8 PCR tubes
- This kit requires a thermal cycler (mini8 or mini16 depending upon your requirements) and an electrophoresis unit (the reagents are optimised for blueGel)
- You will also require micropipettes - 0.5-10uL micropipette and tips, 2-20uL micropipette, 20-200uL micropipette and tips (2-20uL and 20-200uL micropipettes use the same tips) and 100-1000uL micropipette and tips.
- For electrophoresis you will require TBE, agarose and Midori green fluorescent stain. These are also available in a reagent kit.
- You will also need microcentrifuge tubes
- Optional but recommended items - tube rack, PCR rack and microcentrifuge.
- See user guide below pg 5-6 for other laboratory supplies required
