The vinegar fly (fruit fly) Drosophila melanogaster, is famous through its use in genetics since 1909 to demonstrate the principles of heredity, e.g. Mendelian ratios, sex linkage, dominance and variation. The life cycle is completed within twenty days and hence many generations of flies are produced in a relatively short period of time.
Drosophila, Vestigal Wing, Culture.
Recessive trait: wings reduced to vestiges and usually held at right angles to the body. Viability somewhat reduced.

Obtaining Virgin Females:-
The culture we supply contains 20 mature adults (male and female) which will provide you with virgin flies in approximately 20 days after receipt of the delivery.
You will need virgin females for any genetic crossing activities. The mature adults, supplied in our culture, are not suitable for genetic work as they have already mated.
