Chilomonas are small (around 30-40µm) free-living freshwater protozoa that can be found in stagnant water in ponds, ditches and marshes.  They can be cultured in hay infusions.  They are pale to bluish-green in colour and their flattened bodies are convex on one side.  Individuals have two flagella extending from their anterior and lack chloroplasts.
