  L1.45

Oscillatoria - blue-green, long unbranched

Phylum Cyanophyta

Order Oscillatoriales

The main characteristic of this genus is their oscillating movement, and hence their name. The filaments move steadily across the bottom of shallow dishes and pond water and up the sides of containers and rocks. Filaments (trichomes) tend to form clusters rather than parallel bundles, and are sometimes tapered towards the end.

Blue - Green algae are the common cause of algal pollution in fresh water, and in some cases can be pathogenic. Some species can cause contact irritations   (possibly leading to severe dermatitis)
