Oedogonium - green, filamentous algae

Phylum Chlorophyta

Order Oedogoniales

Oedogonium are a filamentous green algae. The unbranched filaments are a single cell thick. The filaments are comprised of cells that are almost cylindrical.  The plant may be attached to surfaces via a holdfast or it may floating.  It is commonly found attached to grasses or bull-rushes at the edges of ponds, lakes, etc.

When the cells are mature, Oedogonium features enlarged female cells (oegonia) and small box-like male cells (antheridia). Sexual reproduction is by fusion of egg and sperm cells.

Oedogonium is distinguished from other unbranched, filamentous algae by the ‘rings’ left after cell division. A number of cells need to be observed to find these rings.
