Red kangaroo

Macropus rufus

Native to Australia, the red kangaroo is the largest of the modern marsupials.  Red kangaroos grow to about 2m in height and weigh up to 90kg.  Kangaroos are grazers, feeding on various grasses and flowering plants.  This species is named for the reddish colour of the male’s pelage.  Females of this species are grey in colour.  Using its bipedal saltatorial locomotion, this species is capable of travelling at speeds up to 65kph and leaping distances of up to 8m.
