Toober and Pins for Modelling Protein Folding

An ideal introduction to the principles that govern protein folding and determine structure.  This kit includes coloured pins that represent amino acid sidechains, and a flexible foam "Toober" (1.2 metres long) made with a wire core.  Students create their own protein structures as they work within the constraints of the laws that determine how amino acid sidechains interact.

Instructions, teaching tips and a list of amino acids showing structures and properties are included.  Several variations on the main activity may be carried out to explain, for example, reversible denaturation, how mutations can disrupt structure and function, and why some amino acid sequences do not occur in natural proteins.
