Atomic Structure Models

Teaching the topic of atomic structure is about to become a whole lot easier! New tactile models from BRIGHT of Sweden make this abstract subject accessible to students in several ways.

  MBA010 BRIGHT Teacher Atom

The Teacher Atom is Ideal for explaining atomic structure, isotopes and ions.

  • All components are magnetic - use them directly on a whiteboard.
  • Includes 2 nuclei, 8 electron shells (up to 4 per nucleus), and 20 of each of the three subatomic particles - protons, neutrons and electrons.
  • A metal sheet (55cm square) is included for storing the model when not in use.

  MBA020 BRIGHT Student Atom

The Student Atom allows students to manipulate atomic structures in a tactile and visual way that reinforces learning.

  • Contains 30 protons, 30 neutrons and 30 electrons that store conveniently inside the case.
  • The lid and base form two separate surfaces that act as atomic structures.

  MBA030 BRIGHT Science Kit

The Bright Science Kit is the complete classroom solution. It includes:

  • One Teacher Atom
  • Eight Student Atoms
  • Lesson plan and work sheets.
  • Excellent Value

  MBA040 BRIGHT Teacher Molecule

The BRIGHT Teacher Molecule is a basic chemistry display tool useful for use on a magnetic whiteboard.

It contains :

  • 20 White atoms - eg Hydrogen
  • 20 Black atoms  - eg Carbon
  • 20 Red atoms - eg Oxygen
  • 10 Blue atoms - eg Nitrogen
  • 10 Yellow atoms - eg Sulphur
  • 10 Green atoms - eg Chlorine
  • 50 bindings

Teachers appreciate the value of BRIGHT atomic structure models:

"Students at Warren Central High School have been using the BRIGHT Atom for the past three years. The use of this wonderful hands-on manipulative has revolutionised the way we teach atomic structure across our science curriculum. It has made the explanation of a complex and abstract topic so much easier and faster... which means the class can move on to other objectives with greater understanding."

And students like them too:

"Clearer and easier to grasp the concepts using the Teacher Atom.

Very good - it's fun and  you learn.

Easier to grasp!"

The image on the left shows a Student Atom. The lid is being used as the atomic nucleus and shows the electron shells as concentric circles. The oxygen atom is being modelled here - the nucleus holds 8 protons and 8 neutrons; the first shell holds 2 electrons and the second shell holds the remaining 6 electrons.

The Danish physicist, Niels Bohr (1885-1962), won the Nobel Prize in 1922 for his work on the structure of atoms. His model of atomic structure successfully introduced the idea of quantized energy levels. That is, electrons exist only in certain permitted energy levels or shells.

Now BRIGHT of Sweden have produced Teacher and Student models that will help you teach this fundamental concept of atomic structure and clear the way for sound comprehension of topics such as the Periodic Table, ionic and covalent bonding, and spectral lines.
