Floral Diversity

The ovary, sepal, pistil, stamen and petal are identified on two examples of a complete flower, a Geranium and a Lily flower.  Labelled male and female Holly flowers represent an imperfect flower.

There are more than 250,000 species of flowering plants in the world, some of the variations are shown in this chart and include the following:

• Odontonia for an Orchid flower

• Sunflower with the two flower types for a Composite flower

• Peace Lily with a Spadix flower

• Willow with a Catkin

• Poinsettia showing the true flower

• Wheat for a Grass flower

• Corn showing male and female flowers on the same plant.
