Stem Histology

Photographs of a cross section of corn and sunflower stem (40x and 44x magnification) showing the differences in the cell structure of Monocots and Dicots.

The vascular bundles for each are clearly shown with labels for the epidermis, cortex and pith also included.  At greater magnification (660x) of the vascular bundles of corn, the Xylem, Phloem, Sieve element and companion cell, Bundle sheath, Parenchyma, Sclerenchyma and Epidermis are labelled.  The vascular bundle of sunflower at 420x magnification shows the following cell types: Phloem fibres (Bundle cap), Phloem, Cambium and Xylem.
