Tips

Preparing and storing sterile items of equipment for future use can save you lots of time, but what is the best way to go about it?  Try this simple procedure:

Cut a piece of sturdy brown paper and wrap the items to be sterilised and stored.  The picture shows a stack of circular filter papers being prepared, but you can use the same method for pipettes, petri dishes, sample bottles or anything else that can be steam sterilised.

Ensure the item is fully enclosed in the brown paper then seal with autoclave tape (E5.35).  The tape develops black diagonal stripes during exposure to steam, so it is easy to see if a package has been sterilised.

During sterilisation, steam will penetrate the brown paper and treat the contents of the package.

Store the sterilised packages in a dry place until required for use.  The contents of a package will remain sterile until opened.  Keep pack sizes low and use everything once a package has been opened.
